Batteries
What Type of Batteries are used in the Redback Range?
(Absorbed Glass Matt) The batteries are 100% maintenance free and will not leak or gas when charging; perfect for use inside the vehicle or enclosed areas. The AGM batteries allow for not only deep cycling but they additionally allow for the massive cranking ability. The cells like to charge at a voltage rate between 13 - 14 Volts, which means that they are fully capable of charging via the vehicles alternator. Your Redback Battery is completely recharged before delivery.
Will they leak or spill?
No. The AGM batteries are completely sealed batteries, meaning that you will not have to worry about the cells leaking acid, gases or any nasty odours. Due to the fact the batteries are completely sealed, it allows for the batteries to be stored on any one of their sides even upside-down while working to full efficiency!
Can I store the Redback in a non-ventilated area, such as under a bed?
Yes. Considering that the Redback is completely sealed it means that the battery does not require a ventilated area for storage. This results in the perfect battery to have stored in an out of the way area such as under a bed in a caravan or under a vehicle's seat, even in a draw in the back of 4WD!
Do the batteries hold a memory?
Unlike many batteries on the market, the Redback does not hold a ‘memory’, which means that at any stage, regardless of the state of charge the Redback may be recharged or discharged, without affecting the life of the unit which is approximately 5-7 years.
Charging Methods
In Vehicle Charging
Your Redback can be continuously connected to a vehicle charging kit without risk whilst simultaneously providing power for on-board accessories (for example – car fridge) if desired.
Can I charge my unit and discharge it at the same time?
Of course.
Charging from a 240v Source
Your Redback can be charged from 240 Volt however, the charger MUST be regulated or automatic to ensure that the cells are not damaged if accidentally left for extended periods.
For an accurate reading of your Redbacks state of charge, wait for 30 minutes after disconnecting from the charger as this will allow time for any “surface charge” to fade.
Can I recharge my Redback straight from my generator?
YES! We recommend putting a regulated battery charger between the generator and your Redback for a faster recharge and to protect you battery from the spikes that can occur with generators charge outputs.
Can I use Solar Panels to charge my unit?
Yes. Solar panels can be used for charging and/or maintaining the Redback. Keep in mind that solar panels that are rated at 10 watts or higher must be regulated when connected to any type of battery. This will prevent the solar panel from over-charging the battery and potentially causing damage.
Will it run my fridge?
Yes it will and many other appliances also such as Winches, High Powered Inverters and more!
One of the main accessories in which people use with the Redback are 12/240Volt compressor type fridges. As the batteries are deep cycle it allows for the running of accessories even while the battery is charging through vehicle charging, Solar or even 240 Volt!
How long will the battery last while running my appliances?
The duration of time that the Redback will last with running accessories such as a fridge largely depends on the amp draw of the appliance in question. For example: a fridge with an average draw of 2 amp per hour would run for 50 hours with a 100 amp hour battery approximately.
What is an Amp Hour?
Amp hour is the rated capacity of the unit. If a unit holds 100 AH and you discharged the unit using a fluorescent light that draws 1 Amp per hour the unit would last for a duration of 100 hours before needing recharging. What is the life expectancy of the batteries used?
The AGM cells used in the Redback range have a life expectancy between 5 - 7 years. The life of the Redback range largely depends on the method in which the unit is charged. Over 10 years on the market has proved that the life expectancy of the units increase when the units are charged via an in car charging kit or left on a fully regulated battery charger when not in use. This maintains the battery and aids in prolonging the life of the cells used.
What is the warranty of the Redback?
The Redback offers a 2-year warranty from the date of your purchase when most retailers only offer 1-year.
